Floor Refinishing and Staining

Home. We’ve found we can make a home anywhere. Jammed into a one bedroom apartment, inside a trailer, a big house, small house, rental… it doesn’t matter.

But one of my favorite things to do is create what “home” means to our family in each space. We are for 'finding the joy in the in between', and we do that with each one we find and create as our own.

One thing we realized after we moved in was that we wanted to refinish the beautiful wood floors throughout. After much investigating, we figured out they are a mix of red and white oak. Amazing! But also could be slightly problematic depending on the color you are wanting to achieve. As a red oak can pull pink and I had a vision I could see in my head...I can't always explain it, but it is there!
I knew I didn’t want them to have any orange, nor yellow, definitely didn’t want grey either… lol. So we after doing a few samples we landed on Bona Nordic stain. We tried out a couple stains, sat on it for a while and after deliberating, we knew this was the one we wanted to go with.

Our new home was so beautiful and really didn’t “need” anything. But we’re so thankful we are able to make this place feel more like us and share the process as we do so!

As we took you along for the process here , I am sharing exactly what everything looked like and how it all came together, below! We hired a local company that, I have to say was incredible! The attention to detail was superb and compared to previous jobs we’ve done, the price was fantastic.

They sanded down the floors with a high grit sander. Then went around with another sander to smooth them out and also used a hand sander to do the edges. They didn’t remove the baseboards - how crazy is that? They were that precise. They also used actual sand paper in hand for small intricate spots. After a good clean up removing any dust, they added one coat of stain with a mop - like - squeegee. It dries quickly, then they added another coat after the same day.

The next day they went around with a buffing machine and buffed the floors. This removed the slightly rough surface the sealer left, leaving the floors so smooth. After that they added a high traffic sealer called Traffic Hd satin waterborne polyurethane to the floors. This took 3 days to cure and was agony to not try and walk on it, put furniture on or drip drool all over it. SO GOOD.

And that was it. The total time for this entire process was about 7 days. But SO very worth it. The color is warm and cool at the same time. Adding a timeless and cozy element to the house that is just perfect! We are slowly taking our time with this space and it feels so amazing, now to decide on a name - any suggestions?
