Laundry Room Wallpaper Update

Remember when we did the kitchen , we moved the large pantry cabinet into the laundry room to make it a laundry/pantry combo? Well I finished it up, and I’m so happy to say it’s done! And it may be my new favorite room in the house!
The laundry room was great as is, but for our family’s needs, it wasn’t the right fit. That’s what I mean when I say “outside the box design”. If you don’t NEED or want extra storage, don’t keep it, if you collect clutter on a counter + want to remove it, do it! I knew I wanted to do wallpaper in here, and initially I was going to go conventional and put it on the walls. But then I had the idea to try something different. I decided to put it on the ceiling. So I got my ladder and laid down my towels and got to work!

Here's what you need: Towels Razor blade Sponge Wallpaper paste Paint brush And the most important tool for this: a friend who likes to workout their arms and dance while doing so...
We started by measuring out the length of the ceiling with a little wiggle room and then cut the paper. Always pay close attention to your paper when moving, trimming, pasting, etc. This was the first time I’ve had to trim the sides of a wallpaper too - so paying close attention is key.
After measuring and trimming, carefully flip it over and paste it! Then you’ll book the paper (fold it over onto itself) for a few minutes to let it relax before you hang it.
The first piece is always the easiest one! Lining up the rest can be tricky, and why not throw in a twist by doing it upside down? I love a good challenge. I might’ve counted this as 2 weeks worth of arm workouts, because, man is hanging wallpaper on a ceiling hard, lol.
Any holes for lights or vents can be cut using a razor blade once the paper is up. I let mine set a little before doing that though just so it's drier and has less of tacky finish! Always get a full pack of razor blades, you’ll go through a few and you’ll want them super sharp.
I had a feeling I was running out of paper, but I decided I wanted to add paper going down the back wall.So I measured. And when I say I literally had just enough left to finish the ceiling and go down the wall, I’m not exaggerating. Like, I didn’t have one scrap more. Before you ask why I didn’t just order more, this wallpaper takes weeks to make, and I didn’t want to wait. So there was no room for error.
Was this my best wallpaper job? No, but I still think it turned out great! The only thing that might drive people mad, and I feel you on this, is that the flowers don’t match up from the ceiling to the wall. I definitely had to piece things together towards the end. But you know what, at least they’re all going the same direction!

I got the question of why I did traditional wallpaper over peel and stick and it’s a personal preference. The peel and stick is great because you skip the step of pasting, however, it’s SO sticky. So it can sometimes be more difficult to work with. With paste it’s a little more moveable. When you put it on the wall, you can glide it and move it. Both are great, but if I were to pick, I’d do paste!
The rest of the walls I painted Benjamin Moore Black Top. It’s my fave black paint, but keep in mind sometimes it can pull a green/blue undertone. I have been dying to paint a room black and once the second coat went up, I knew it was the right decision. It’s stunning!
I also painted the ceiling vent black to blend perfectly with the wallpaper. And then I decided to paint the side of the pantry cabinet black to make it feel more like a built-in rather than a cabinet we moved in from the other room.
We built our own open shelves again here, but this is just a reminder that you can always go for the more inexpensive wood and stain it. You can also add a white wash to tone down the natural tones of the wood to get it to the color you want. I chose different brackets for these ones that the ones in the kitchen because they are narrower shelves.
As little finishing touches, I swapped out some of the original containers for detergent and cleaning supplies with more minimal and neutral ones. If it’s gonna be out, make it cute! There are lots of design rules + design norms that are out there but there’s only one I follow…. We can be happy in a mansion or an RV, an outdated home or a brand new home, but there is no feeling like making a space OUR home. Make home yours + have fun doing it!
